Michel Awad, the grandfather of three-year-old Alexandra Naggear, who has been identified as one of two people from Canada killed in the deadly Beirut explosion, spoke Sunday about his granddaughter as a loving, happy, very smart child who you would not think is a "baby."

Awad told Global News that Alexandra had been playing in her home with her mother and father nearby, when he says his daughter heard the first explosion before the second, much larger blast rocked the port of Beirut and surrounding areas. He said his granddaughter was rushed to hospital following the blast with a "severe injury" to her head and died three days later.

The grandfather, who currently is in Lebanon, said his daughter and her family had planned to move to Montreal, Que. likely in the fall and that Alexandra would attend school in Canada, but then the explosion happened, which he said could have been avoided.
