WE scandal: Cabinet ministers, top public servant grilled by Canadian ethics committee | FULL
CA, 12 Aug 2020
Two federal cabinet ministers and the country’s top public servant were questioned on Tuesday about a cancelled $912-million student grant program that was to be administered by WE Charity, an organization with close ties to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Youth Minister Bardish Chagger and Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough defended the government’s handling of the process of awarding the contract, and said the government was focused on WE’s ability to deliver the program rather than on financial issues within WE Charity.
Meanwhile, Clerk of the Privy Council Ian Shugart argued that the public service was overtaxed by the demands of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic and that they had even gone so far as to warn the Auditor General that “mistakes” could be made as a result.
