Mississippi governor signs bill to remove flag with Confederate emblem

CA, 01 Jul 2020
Mississippi governor Tate Reeves signed a bill into law on Tuesday, passed by the state legislature, to remove the current flag design, which features the Confederate battle emblem. The state was the last in the U.S. to have the symbol on its flag and will now see a new flag, which cannot feature the emblem, voted on in November.

The bill to change in the flag comes amid increasing pressure, as protests against racial injustice, specifically toward the Black community, have continued across the country and internationally. To most Black Americans, the Confederate flag stands for white supremacy and racial violence.

During a press conference held prior to the signing, Reeves said he was signing the law to "turn a page in Mississippi." Reeves said a flag was a symbol of "our present, of our people and of our future," and it was those reasons why a new symbol was needed.

Reeves said whether people are proud or angry over the step, "I want you to know that I love you, I am praying for you." He said he recognized healing won't happen by a bill or a politician or legislative body, saying it must be done together "as a family."
