Republican congressman asks Google to commit to not adopting “anti-police policies”

CA, 30 Jul 2020
During a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Wednesday asked Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet which is the parent company of Google, about a letter from members of the public asking them to exit partnerships like with U.S. law enforcement, and questioned if the technology giant would pledge to not adopt "bigoted anti-police policies."

Pichai responded, saying they had a track record of working with law enforcement when supported by due process and said they were committed to working with law enforcement "in a way that's consistent with law and due processes" in the U.S.

Pichai was among four Big Tech CEOs — plus Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Apple’s Tim Cook — who appeared before Congress on Wednesday to testify and answer for their companies’ practices before U.S. Congress at a hearing by the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust.

The panel has conducted a bipartisan investigation over the past year of the tech giants’ market dominance and their effect on consumers.

It’s the first such congressional review of the tech industry.
