Alberta RCMP deputy commissioner walks back denial of systemic racism in Canadian policing | FULL
CA, 13 Jun 2020
Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP, acknowledged comments that were made earlier in the week, and after initially denying there is systemic racism in Canadian policing, Zablocki changed his statement after he said he had conversations with fellow Mounties, Indigenous leaders and community members.
Zablocki said the comments "were not intended to minimize the experiences some people have endured in working with or interacting with the systems and policies of the RMCP."
He stated that he is "committed" to ensuring he and the employees of the Alberta RMCP "continue the necessary work here in the province to eliminate systemic racism."
The statements come a day after the release of the arrest video of Chief Allan Adam from March 10.
Zablocki wouldn't comment saying they are limited on what they can say about the video showing the arrest of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Adam because the incident is under investigation by ASIRT, the province's independent police watch dog.
