Atlanta mayor speaks on police reforms, says Rayshard Brooks death 'pissed me off' | FULL

CA, 16 Jun 2020
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms spoke on Monday about the death of Rayshard Brooks on Friday, which occurred following a scuffle with police.

Bottoms announced she would be signing administrative orders to adopt and implement reforms of the standard operating procedures and work rules of the Atlanta Police Department (APD) concerning use-of-force policies. She said it will include addressing response to resistance regarding use of deadly force “in accordance with the principle” and that police should only use the amount of objectively reasonable force to protect themselves, arrest or bring an incident under control.

The mayor also said she would be signing an administrative order to convene a body to “begin to succinctly articulate our grievances” and what is seen as solutions in terms of human rights.

At the end of the briefing, Bottoms spoke emotionally about Brooks' death, saying that to hear him in bodycam video saying he wanted to go home for his daughter's birthday "breaks my heart." She said she can't do anything to change what happened but will try and continue to make sure "it doesn't happen again," adding that his death "pissed me off" because she said the incident didn't have to result in his death.
