Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Wednesday explained what having a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) would mean for the country, in their respective views, during separate news conferences.

Freeland said that it's beneficial for Canadians and for the world to have a seat at the UNSC because the country must play a role in supporting rules-based international order and multilateralism, while Trudeau said it's an opportunity for Canada's voice and values to be heard on the world stage.

Canada will learn as early as Wednesday afternoon whether Trudeau’s multi-year push for one of the two UNSC seats available in the "Western Europe and Others" regional grouping will be a success.
