The U.S. Senate has approved a sanctions bill in response to a planned national security law for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

The bill calls for sanctions on individuals or companies considered by the Senate to be supporting efforts to restrict HKSAR's autonomy. It also includes sanctions on banks that do business with these entities.

China has reiterated that HKSAR's freedoms will be guaranteed and has long warned the U.S. not to interfere in its internal affairs.
