Rochester mayor suspends officers involved in Daniel Prude’s death

CA, 04 Sep 2020
Lovely Warren, the mayor of Rochester, N.Y., said Thursday that “against the advice of council” she has suspended the police officers involved in the death of Daniel Prude.

Prude, a 41-year-old Black man, died in March seven days after officers put a “spit hood” over his head and pressed his face into the ground for more than three minutes.

A medical examiner declared his death a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of a physical restraint."

Warren said Thursday she had been told that Prude died of a drug overdose while in police custody.

Activists and family of Prude have demanded the officers involved in his death be charged.
