Hindu prayer rituals were held across India on Sunday as fans of Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan learned he and his family had been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Bachchan’s daughter-in-law, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her daughter both tested positive for the virus on Sunday, a day after Bachchan and his son Abhishek Amitabh Bachchan were admitted to hospital.

Amitabh Bachchan and his son are both said to be in stable condition, according to health authorities.

India registered a record increase in the number of coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of cases in the country to nearly 850,000.
