Investigative journalist and founder of the news site Beirut Report, Habib Battah, said Tuesday there is “great fear” in Lebanon after a massive explosion in the capital.

Battah said the country was already crippled by a surge in coronavirus cases and a financial crisis before the explosion in Beirut’s port.

“I don’t know how hospital’s cope. They barely coped with the COVID,” he said, adding that there are very few ICU beds in Lebanon to handle an influx of patients.

Battah said firefighters in the country are ill-equipped to handle a disaster on the scale that was seen on Tuesday.

“They get no information from the government on what kind of fires, what kind of materials they’re going into,” he said. “There’s no accounting, there’s no inventories. There’s no regulatory framework.”
