U.S. President Donald Trump presented Olympic wrestling gold medalist and coach, Dan Gable, with the Medal of Freedom on Monday.

Gable is the first wrestler in history to receive the honour.

“No one has done more to promote wrestling in America than Dan Gable,” said Trump, calling him an “athletic giant who conquered one of the most difficult and ancient sports in the world.”

The ceremony in the White House was the second in a week where guests did not appear to be social distancing or wearing masks.

As a wrestler, Gable was a two-time NCAA wrestling champion and earned a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics, representing the U.S. While he was coach at the University of Iowa, his teams won 15 NCAA national titles and 12 of the athletes he coached went on to become Olympians themselves. He also coached the U.S. team in five Olympic games.
