Alberta wildfires: Officials provide update as more evacuated residents return home | LIVE

CA, 26 May 2023
Officials with Alberta Wildfire and the Alberta Emergency Management agency will provide an update about the province's wildfire situation on Thursday.

After nearly a month of wildfires raging across Alberta, the province said recent firefighting efforts combined with a turn in the weather has made it possible to allow more people able to return to their homes.

“The extreme rate of growth we saw on these wildfires earlier this month has now slowed over the past two days,” Alberta Wildfire information unit manager Christie Tucker said during Wednesday’s update.

The spring of 2023 has been the most active wildfire season in Alberta history, with more than 1,000,031 hectares burnt by 521 wildfires, as of Wednesday afternoon.

At this time last year, only 450 hectares had burned. While this year is the highest number on record for area covered by spring wildfires, 1984 still had the highest burn rate across the entire season, with 1.3 million hectares.
