U.S. president-elect Joe Biden is expected to announce judge Merrick Garland as his pick for attorney general on Thursday, as well as other key Justice Department nominees.

Garland made headlines in 2016 when former president Barack Obama picked him as his nominee to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat that became empty when justice Antonin Scalia died earlier that year. However, Garland was never confirmed to the court because Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to hold a hearing on the nomination, saying that the person elected president in November should choose the next justice.

Garland has served as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C., one of the highest courts in America, next to the Supreme Court.
