Over the last two decades, opioid addiction has become one of the most serious epidemics in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 110,236 people died from drug overdoses in the U.S. in 2022, setting yet another staggering new record.

Having worked in addiction treatment for 25 years, Nia Castleman, an administrator at St John of God Health Care Services in Victorville, California, witnessed the surge of the opioid crisis. She believes that pharmaceutical companies played a very big role in how people have systematically become addicted to opioid painkillers. As illicit fentanyl spreads across the country, more Americans are becoming addicted and even losing their lives. CGTN Stringer joins a group session at St. John of God Health Care Services, where recovering addicts speak of their struggles in the opioid crisis. One said he had a good family and a good job but ended up losing everything because of his fentanyl addiction.
