Deb Haaland sworn in as first-ever Native American U.S. cabinet secretary
CA, 18 Mar 2021
Deb Haaland, a former U.S. representative from New Mexico, was sworn in Thursday as Secretary of the Interior, becoming the first Native American to lead a cabinet agency and securing a central role in President Joe Biden's plans to fight climate change.
The Senate confirmed Haaland on Monday, after she clinched support from Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Lisa Murkowski, Dan Sullivan and Susan Collins.
Haaland was one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress in 2018 and her ascension to cabinet reportedly followed weeks of campaigning by Native American and environmental groups in support of her historic appointment. She will oversee policies guiding use of 500 million acres of federal and tribal land and oversee the government's relationship with some 574 recognized tribal nations. She is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe.
