Members of the public pay their respects to late civil rights icon John Lewis
CA, 28 Jul 2020
Following an invitation-only ceremony in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, the casket of civil rights icon and longtime Georgia congressman John Lewis was brought onto the East front Steps of the Capitol building for a public viewing on July 27.
The viewing was held outdoors as a precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lewis, who was one of the "freedom riders" who rode interstate buses into the segregated South and was among those to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 on the day that would become known as "Bloody Sunday," is the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda.
He died on July 17 at the age of 80 after a battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.
