Agnès Callamard, U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, called the January U.S. drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and nine other people a “violation” of international law on Thursday.

Callamard said the U.S. failed to provide sufficient evidence of an ongoing or imminent attack against its interest that would justify the attack.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced in early January that a U.S. air strike on Soleimani’s convoy as it left the Baghdad airport had killed the top Iranian general and nine others.

Callamard said the drone strike could now open the door for other other nations to “eliminate high-ranking military or non-military officials outside the context of a known war.”
