U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that the comments he made about the government looking at banning Chinese social media apps such as TikTok must be seen in the broader context of making sure “the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t have an easy way to access American citizens’ data.”

Pompeo added the decision is not targetting a specific company but rather is related to protecting America’s national security.

He also praised the decision by tech companies Google, Facebook and Twitter for suspending Chinese government’s user data requests in Hong Kong over China's latest national security law.
