U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday confirmed that the administration had notified Congress of its intent to withdraw from the World Health Organization.

Pompeo said the president had made clear they would not support an organization that has "historically been incompetent," saying there's been a focus on the failures surrounding Wuhan - where the novel coronavirus outbreak began - but said the institution had also "got it wrong" on SARS and Ebola.

The secretary of state added they would work with Congress with respect to appropriated funds pledged to the WHO - the U.S. owes an estimated US$230 million as part of its assessed contributions to the WHO for its two-year operating budget.
