Coronavirus: Canada could see up to nearly 128,000 cases, more than 9,100 deaths by August 23 | FULL

During a briefing on new COVID-19 modelling predictions for Canada, the country's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Thursday that based on data up to Aug. 8, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 could be between 121,650 to 127,740 by Aug. 23. Tam also said the range of total deaths by the same date would be between 8,980 to 9,115.
To date, there have been 121,174 confirmed cases in Canada with 107,553 cases having recovered. 9,015 people have died from COVID-19.
Tam also warned that officials were planning for multiple scenarios of the coronavirus pandemic, including the worst scenario which would see a “fall peak” of cases followed by ongoing “peaks and valleys” later this year. She said while it was difficult to determine whether a potential “fall peak” of COVID-19 would indeed take place, she stressed how well they control COVID-19 currently will determine the probability of such a peak, adding “the fate is in our hands.”
Ngoo said determining whether a second wave or outbreak would occur in the country this fall was difficult, but that they would be looking at how human behaviour may change such as people spending more time indoors due to cooler weather, and students heading back to school. He said they also would be watching how the upcoming flu season interacts with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and will adjust as necessary.
The country's top two doctors said they were continuing to monitor the upcoming respiratory illness season as it will likely correspond with the COVID-19 pandemic and how it might impact health care capacity. Tam said provinces have “overplanned” for influenza and other respiratory viruses and its impact on the health system, but she is keeping an eye to see if current COVID-19 measures like increased hand washing could reduce the risk of these other illnesses.
