BodyBreak’s Hal Johnson says show created to combat racism he faced early in career including at TSN

CA, 17 Jun 2020
Hal Johnson said he and his wife Joanne McLeod created BodyBreak in response to numerous racist incidents he faced early in his career, including TSN reneging on a job offer because it already had a Black reporter on its roster.

The show became a staple on Canadian television sets in the 1990s and included fitness tips and recipes for healthy meals. But even its creation took time, with Johnson and wife Joanne McLeod taking it to 42 different companies which turned them down. Johnson said he took it to TSN who loved the idea but wanted it only if it were led by a white woman and white man.

He spoke about his experiences in an interview with Global News' Farah Nasser, and weighed in on the ongoing protests against anti-Black racism, saying his father was hopeful and so is he, and when asked by friends of his who are white what they can do, he has told them to "just listen."
