CA, 12 Jun 2020
Canada's federal ministers including chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam, Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller and Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages Mélanie Joly held a briefing Thursday to provide an update on the government's economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller announced federal funding of a further $133 million to aid Indigenous businesses suffering the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the total amount announced Thursday, $117 million is to help small and community-owned Indigenous businesses.
The remaining $16 million is to support Indigenous businesses in the tourism sector, which supports thousands of jobs across the country.
This money adds to $306 million in federal emergency aid announced in April for small and medium-sized Indigenous businesses.
Minister Miller also stated that the COVID-19 curve is flattening on First Nations reserves and in Nunavik, but warned that they must remain vigilant against a potential resurgence.
