Canadian officials speak after losing bid for UN Security Council seat | FULL

CA, 18 Jun 2020
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations Marc-André Blanchard spoke out on Wednesday after the country lost its high-profile bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.

Blanchard said the race between Canada, Norway and Ireland was “very competitive,” and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to the UN, stating that “we need the UN more than ever in the world.”
Canada received just 108 votes, even fewer than the 114 first-round ballot votes that it received in 2010 when the former Conservative government ran and failed to win a seat.
Norway secured 130 vote, while Ireland received 128.

A total of 128 votes were needed to secure a two-thirds majority.

Champagne said following the loss that he would be open to a review of Canada’s foreign policy, but stressed that Canada’s “voice and standing in the world” remains strong.
