Top U.S. general says military needs to “take a hard look” at Confederate symbols
CA, 10 Jul 2020
Gen. Mark Milley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, suggested on Thursday that the military should “take a hard look” at Confederate statues and other symbols, further recommending a commission be set up to explore the issue.
Milley’s statement to Congress comes after U.S. President Donald Trump spoke out against renaming military bases that are named after Confederate leaders.
Milley said the Confederacy was “an act of treason” against the U.S. Constitution and that the generals involved had “turned their back on their oath.”
He said the decision to name some bases after Confederate generals was a political decision at the time and would be today, but said the focus of the military should be on unity and cohesion.
