New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Rev. Al Sharpton joined activists on Fifth Avenue Thursday, where a “Black Lives Matter” mural was painted on the street in front of Trump Tower, despite pushback from the president earlier in July.

The mural, painted in large yellow letters, is one of several planned in each of New York City’s five boroughs.

In a tweet, U.S. President Donald Trump called the mural a “symbol of hate” and said of Fifth Avenue that it would be “denigrating this luxury avenue.”

Bill de Blasio replied on Thursday that the activists were in fact “liberating Fifth Avenue” by painting the slogan.
