Portland protests: Riot declared after protesters set fire inside government building
CA, 19 Aug 2020
Police in the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon, declared a riot late Tuesday evening after protesters lit fires, threw rocks and smashed windows at county government offices, after weeks of mostly peaceful anti-racism demonstrations.
Police said in a statement that “several hundred people” gathered for a march in Colonel Sumners Park at around 9 pm.
A riot was declared around 90 minutes later, after some protesters “started throwing ignited paper inside of the Multnomah Building in an attempt to start a fire.” Police said when this did not work, “the group began spraying lighter fluid.”
A person in the crowd then “threw a large burning object inside” which set off the fire alarms and sprinkler system, officials stated.
This is the 12th straight week that demonstrators have taken to the streets in Portland following the killing of George Floyd.
