A rare type of freshwater jellyfish was spotted in early June 2020 in a pond in Qujing, a city in China's southwestern province of Yunnan. The swarm of the tiny animals found in Fuyuan county's Shibalian Forest Park was identified as Craspedacusta sowerbii, more commonly known as "peach blossom jellyfish". Of the world’s 11 known varieties of peach blossom jellyfish, nine can be found in China. China added the creature to its list of critically endangered species in 2002, and local authorities have said they will protect the jellyfish, which are very sensitive to any changes in their living environments.
