UK unveils details of citizenship offer for Hongkongers with BN(O) passport holders

The UK has provided details about the pathway to citizenship it is offering to some 2.9 million Hongkongers with British National (Overseas) passports on July 22, 2020. Officials said online applications will open to Hong Kong BN(O) passport holders in January 2021. The historic policy change came as a response to Beijing’s enactment of a national security law for Hong Kong, which London says law breaches the terms of the Sino-British Joint Declaration handover treaty agreed in 1984. On July 23, Beijing said it will consider not recognising BN(O) passports as valid travel documents.
