Coronavirus: Saskatchewan education minister says masks not mandatory in classrooms
CA, 08 Aug 2020
During a press conference on Friday, Saskatchewan's Education Minister Gord Wyant said that under the Safe Schools Plan, when students return to school in September, masks will not be mandatory in classrooms.
The statement from Wyant comes as at least one campaign critical of the government's plan urged the province to mandate face coverings if students are going to be sent back into schools.
He also said the province had ordered six million masks for use in schools during the upcoming year.
Wyant said the decision to mandate masks was in the hands of chief medical officer of health Dr. Saqib Shahab and he said with the province in "Level 1" in terms of the plan, a mandate will not be put into place. Mask usage as determined by Shahab would take effect if the province determined it needed to move into "Level 2" of the Safe Schools Plan.
