Arson suspected after fire tears through historic 15th century cathedral in France
CA, 18 Jul 2020
Arson is suspected following a fire at a historic 15th-century cathedral in the western French city of Nantes on Saturday, officials said.
The fire at the cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul blew out stained glass windows and destroyed the cathedral’s grand organ.
Pierre Sennes, the Nantes public prosecutor, said investigators are treating the fire as a criminal act.
This is not the first time the historic cathedral, which is about 340 kilometres southwest of Paris, has been damaged by fire.
It was partly destroyed as a result of allied bombings during World War Two and its roof was destroyed by a fire in 1972. The cathedral was rebuilt 13 years later with a concrete structure replacing the wooden roof.
