NATO head condemns Russian attack on Ukraine: "This is barbaric"

CA, 24 Feb 2022
NATO secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to order a “special military action” in Ukraine, saying “we are at a grave moment for the security of Europe.”

He called the decision “barbaric” and accused Russia of “trying to turn back the clock by force.”

At the same press conference, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday that the European Union would introduce “massive and targeted” sanctions against Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine.

She said the sanctions would have a “harsh impact” on Russia’s economy.

Von der Leyen also said European Union member-states have “explicit contingency plans” to welcome refugees from Ukraine, with “ample” humanitarian aid and shelter for those fleeing the conflict.
