COVID-19: Ontario easing restrictions Jan. 31, with plan to lift most measures by mid-March | FULL
CA, 20 Jan 2022
The Ontario government is easing COVID-19 restrictions on some businesses — including restaurants and gyms — Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Thursday.
The news comes a day after Ford told reporters a "good announcement" would be coming this week regarding restaurants and gyms in the province. Currently, only take-out, delivery and patio service are allowed. Gyms also had to close when new COVID-related measures to combat the Omicron variant were announced earlier this month.
On Wednesday, Health Minister Christine Elliott said the province is starting to see “glimmers of hope” in its fight against the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Cases are expected to peak this month, with a peak in hospitalizations and ICU admissions to follow, she said.
Ontario reported 4,132 people in hospital on Wednesday with COVID-19 and 589 people in intensive care – a decrease in hospitalizations from 4,183 the previous day, but an increase in ICU patients from 580.
