Afghanistan crisis: State Department says “vast majority" of Afghans employed by US are evacuated
CA, 28 Aug 2021
Speaking on Friday, one day after a devastating attack at the Kabul airport that killed scores of Afghans and 13 U.S. service members, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the “vast majority” of Afghans who were employed by the U.S. military during its mission have now been evacuated.
Price also said the government is in talks with “several hundred” Americans who are undetermined about whether to leave the country, adding that officials reach out to these individuals several times a day.
He also said that teams of U.S. and international air traffic experts have assessed the Hamid Karzai International Airport to help facilitate a “smooth transfer” once the U.S. completes evacuations on Aug. 31. However, he cautioned that it would be “unreasonable” to expect normal airport operations to resume on Sept. 1.
