US President Joe Biden is expected to provide an update on the country's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan to evacuate American citizens, SIV applicants and their families, and other vulnerable Afghans, after a virtual meeting with Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) to discuss the crisis.

Western military forces at Kabul airport worked frantically on Tuesday to get people out of Afghanistan before an Aug. 31 deadline, as Biden faced growing pressure to negotiate more time for the airlift of thousands trying to flee following the Taliban’s takeover of the Afghan capital on Aug. 15.

Biden, who has said U.S. troops might stay beyond the deadline, has warned the evacuation was going to be “hard and painful” and much could still go wrong.
