AFN chief outlines 5 election priorities, calls for healing after residential school discoveries
CA, 01 Sep 2021
Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald called for the next government of Canada, whomever it may be, to participate in the healing process for Indigenous communities after the discovery of unmarked graves at multiple former residential sites across the country.
It was the first of five election priorities, which also included a climate plan that prioritizes Indigenous voices, economic growth and “wealth building” for First Nations communities, respect for First Nations sovereignty and the strengthening of Indigenous governing and health-care systems.
Archibald also called for an “ongoing dialogue” even after the election following the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools across the country, and said she would continue to press the Pope to deliver a formal apology “on Canadian soil.”
Voters head to the polls on Sept. 20.
