Canadian officials provided an update Tuesday on the situation in Afghanistan after America’s withdrawal from the country ended on Monday.

The Taliban held full control of Kabul’s international airport Tuesday after the last U.S. plane left its runway, marking the end of America’s longest war and leaving behind a now-quiet airfield and Afghans outside it still hoping to flee the insurgents’ rule.

The end of U.S. military flights all but shuts down the last remaining avenues of escape for thousands of Afghans who supported Canada and its allies since the war began in 2001.

Canada’s last military flight left Afghanistan on Aug. 26.
