Hikers are flocking to Mount Fuji to view the sunrise, following the reopening of its climbing trails on July 1, 2021. Officially open in early July-September, the trails were closed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The mountain is deemed too treacherous to climb for the rest of the year, when facilities are closed to discourage potential hikers. Yet in October 2019, a man died after falling off the mountain while live-streaming. A quintessential symbol of Japan, Mount Fuji has been the backdrop for the Tokyo Olympics cycling events.
