Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement in Ottawa on Monday as he continues to face criticism over his response to COVID-19 vaccine certification.

Last week, the Ontario COVID-19 Science Table issued a report laying out the arguments in favour of some kind of "vaccine certificate" system for domestic use in Ontario. The table, which advises the provincial government on its response to COVID-19, argued the certification could potentially speed up reopening in the province and may even incentivize people to get the vaccine.

The report said the certificates could be used to allow people to enter places that pose a "high risk" for COVID-19 transmissions, like indoor dining, bars, and gyms, and could allow for the reopening of "high-risk settings sooner and/or at increased capacity."

However, despite the report, Ontario government officials including the premier have in recent weeks said they would not implement such a system, arguing they "aren't going to have a split society."

As of Sunday, Ontario is reporting 172 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the provincial total to 549,328. The death toll in the province now stands at 9,313 as two new deaths were recorded.
