Thousands of Afghan families have fled their homes to escape fighting in the former Taliban bastion of Kandahar, as Afghanistan's conflict escalates ahead of the withdrawal of US troops by 31 August. The United Nations is warning that Afghanistan could see the highest number of civilian deaths in more than a decade if the insurgents' offensives across the country are not halted.
