"Nowhere to go:" Afghan refugees fleeing Taliban rule plead for help in Pakistan
CA, 02 Sep 2021
Afghan refugees who entered into Pakistan at Chaman are pleading for help, saying they fled because of fierce fighting and the ensuing fear and unemployment that followed under the Taliban rule.
"There was no work there, no jobs. We have fled to Pakistan in disarray. We are requesting the Pakistani government to help us because we are refugees. Look at these kids, they have nowhere to go," said refugee Arif on Thursday, who had fled with his family of eight from Mazar-i-Sharif – one of the some 150 families who have crossed in to Pakistan since Wednesday.
The Taliban, who captured Kabul and brought a chaotic end to 20 years of war, have tried to present a more moderate face to the world since they swept aside the U.S.-backed government and returned to power last month, promising to protect human rights and refrain from reprisals against old enemies.
Meanwhile, there is growing concern among Pakistani officials about security in neighbouring Afghanistan, as the Taliban tries to form a government and stabilize the country following the departure of U.S. and other foreign forces.
The United Nations refugee agency has said up to half a million Afghans could flee their homeland by year's end.
