The Indonesian city of Surabaya has a new volunteer on the streets to help with the Covid-19 pandemic – a robotic helper made from discarded household appliances. The “Delta Robot” was the brainchild of a local official and university professors, who envisioned it as a way to entertain residents of Tembok Gede, a subdistrict of the port city in East Java. The robot, with parts including pots, pans, an old television and a rice cooker for a head, delivers food and smiles for people who are self-isolating to fight the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19.
