The history of Nepalese Gurkha soldiers serving in the British army dates back as far as 1815, but Gurkha veterans said they still are not getting the same pension rights as other former soldiers in the UK. Some former Gurkha servicemen have been on a hunger strike for more than a week to show their determination to get equal pensions. Wearing signs with slogans saying “fast unto death” and “equal danger, equal reward,”, the group including 71-year-old Gurkha veteran Yam Gurung were staging their protest near the British prime minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street in London on August 17, 2021.
