Government of Canada officials are expected to hold a press conference Friday to provide an update on the country's ongoing COVID-19 response.

Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc and Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra will be joined by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, Jennifer O’Connell to announce new developments related to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Canada's public health agency officials pleaded on Thursday for unvaccinated people to get their COVID-19 shots as they said data shows a fourth wave of the pandemic is underway in the country.

Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo said during a press conference that the fourth wave is driven by unvaccinated people.

“The fourth wave is really being driven primarily by individuals who are unvaccinated, it’s less than 1 per cent of the cases that have been reported to us who are vaccinated,” he said.

Some 82 per cent of Canadians have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, but with the more contagious Delta variant public health is considering a third vaccine dose for immunocompromised people .
