Football fans guilty of online racist abuse will be banned from matches, says Boris Johnson
Telegraph, 14 Jul 2021
The Government is changing the football banning order regime to cover online racism, Boris Johnson told MPs, as he sought to brush off suggestions he had "given the green card to racism".
During a rowdy PMQs, in which the Speaker had to intervene, Sir Keir Starmer was damning of the Prime Minister's prior reluctance to condemn fans who had booed England footballers for taking the knee.
Quoting Johnny Mercer, the former veterans minister, as proof that Conservative MPs had turned against the Government lined, the Labour leader told Mr Johnson: "Behind you they don't believe you and neither do we. Now they have realised they are on the wrong side and hope that nobody has noticed."
But Mr Johnson insisted he was taking "practical steps" to address racism, including social media fines of up to 10 per cent of global revenues if they do not remove racist content.
The Prime Minister also said those who are guilty of racism "will not be going to the match".
