Gareth Southgate has said that he feels like his stomach muscles have been "ripped out this morning" during his post-Euro 2020 press conference following England's defeat on penalties by Italy in Sunday's Wembley final.
Despite his visceral reaction to the defeat, England's head coach did consider reaching the final as part of the journey his improving team is on. "Most teams that win, France went through what we’re feeling now in 2016. Spain did it before they won. It’s normally part of the process you have to go through. The fact we’ve had the first signs of some consistency - semi-final, final - that has to be the right direction."
He acknowledged the national mood and admitted that he, too, in the vocabulary of the game felt truly 'gutted' by the result. "When you get so close it’s more painful of course," Southgate said. "It feels like my stomach’s been ripped out this morning. But I know that is the process we have to go through, and England have to keep that track going, whoever’s here, whoever’s at the FA."
That last remark raised questions about his own future despite the FA CEO's stated desire earlier in the tournament to tie Sougthate down to a new long-term contract.
