Chinese medallists Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi face an International Olympic Committee (IOC) investigation after the cyclists appeared on the podium in Tokyo wearing pins bearing the image of the country’s founding father Mao Zedong. Officials say the women's team sprint cyclists, who won gold on August 2, 2021, may have violated Olympic Charter Rule 50, which prohibits political displays by medallists as they take the podium. The IOC has meanwhile suspended its investigation of US shot put medallist Raven Saunders, who made an X gesture with her arms as she received a silver the previous day.
