China has been closely watching the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and is positioning itself to exert influence in the war-torn nation according to foreign policy experts. Beijing has pledged support for the Taliban to play a role in Afghanistan’s reconstruction, but also demanded that the insurgent group cut ties with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. China blames the group for attacks in its western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The analysts say China’s deepening ties with the Taliban could be a move to maintain stability in Xinjiang and to expand the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing’s plan to grow global trade.
