Hizbollah launched a barrage of rockets into Israel on Friday morning in a significant escalation of tensions.

According to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), 19 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory just after 11am, 10 of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome and three falling within Lebanon.

In a statement Hizbollah claimed responsibility for “dozens of 122mm rockets” striking “open lands” in the disputed Shebaa farms area, saying that it was retaliation for rare airstrikes that Israel carried out in southern Lebanon late on Wednesday.

The Israeli military responded to Hizbollah’s attack with artillery shelling into the south of Lebanon, causing wildfires in the region of Arkoub, according to state-run Lebanese media, NNA.

No casualties were reported from the two airstrikes or any of the rocket attacks.
