The Australian city of Melbourne continued to be racked by protests on September 22, 2021. For the third straight day, demonstrators marched in the capital of the southeastern state of Victoria to oppose Covid-19 lockdowns and mandatory vaccine rules in the construction industry. Riot police and mounted units later cleared and reportedly arrested more than 200 protesters at the city’s Shrine of Remembrance, a local war memorial. This followed the two-week shutdown of construction sites after violent clashes broke out between workers and other protesters, leading to the arrests of 60 people. The Victoria state government now requires all workers to have at least one jab before construction can restart, beginning on October 5, to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections.
